CULTS IN AMERICA (the Pot Calling the Kettle Black)

CULTS IN AMERICA.
(The Pot Calling the Kettle Black !!??)
I suppose i will be called both contumacious (stubbornly disobedient) and controversial (as well as evil) for writing this one, but the amusing aspects of the subject are too compelling not to address. I guess i can admit that sometimes temptation just gets the better of me. This is one of those times.
I have had some acutely snide and narrow mindedly insulting comments in response to my "attitude" toward modern day religions; more precisely toward "christianity' as interpreted by some 'christian' readers.
Apparently it is OK to show disdain in respect to these "other religions", but when i appear to show any proclivity toward lumping christianity with all those others, it merits death threats and promises of eternal hellfire (or is this just christianity at its best?).
In my view, Christianity and Islam-ism belong in the same category with all other organized religions. Or, to paraphrase: All organized religions are in the category of "cults" in the bad sense of that word.
Most people view cults as groups that are recognizably destructive to its members. The larger more well known and more prominent cults as marked (defined) by size of their membership and duration of existence are no less manipulative and controlling than their newer and smaller counterparts. (so you see; size and duration does matter after all).
Mainstream people view 'cults' ,as the media references, by the notorious activities of such "churches" as: David Koresh and the Davidians; Jim Jones and the People's Temple; or Marshall Applewhite and Heaven's Gate.
From the basic christian mentality, or point of view, the top 10 most dangerous groups in America are: (listed in no particular order). (The following list is from Christian.Org). {Just by sticking the word [christain] somewhere in the title does not make it as benign as they would wish to appear. }
1. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - formed in 1830's
2. United Pentecostal Church - formed in 1945
3. Christianity Identity Movement (aryan nation, Klu Klux Klan, Etc..)
4. The Nation of Islam (black Muslims) - formed in 1930's
5. The Family (Children of God)
6. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (Jehova Witness) - formed in 1970's
7. Church of Scientology
8. The 12 Tribes - formed in 1970's
9. The International Churches of Christ - formed in 1978
10. The Holy Spirit Associates for the Unification of World Christianity - formed in 1954 by the infamous Sun Myung Moon (the moonies).
They go on to describe these organizations in more detail, which is rather superfluous here.
All of these (religions), (churches), (cults), {All synonymous}, are purportedly extremely manipulative, controlling, authoritarian and proclaim themselves to be the "one and only true religion".
My question here is this: Besides these above listed "menaces" to society, can anyone name one religion, past or present, that does not fit into these categories as well???
Longevity of a cult's (religion's) existence does not give it more credence than any other factor. The basic truth of the matter is that every single (individual) religious entity has their own indoctrination and brainwashing techniques.
The most insidious and indelibly entrenched entities are those that have survived for centuries by indoctrinating and brainwashing their unsuspecting innocent children, generation after generation, to perpetuate that mind control, mainly by using the 'fear factor' and/or the 'guilt factor". This history is the worst kind of child abuse i can imagine.
This in itself constitutes a crime against humanity in its most base and offensive form. Like a cancer permeating society unchecked, unstoppable, indefeasible and most of all indefensible. One of the greatest crimes ever perpetrated and continuously perpetuated against society throughout the history of man. All this is just an exercise in control by the use, or rather, the abuse of power over people.
The Creator must be looking down on this farce either in awe of the stupidity of man, or in sheer amusement of the ignorance of humanity. Either way, he obviously sees no need to intervene, probably in hopes that mankind will annihilate itself, with the hope that the next time around will produce a society with the thirst for knowledge, peace, love and harmony that man is meant to share with each other. All in all, i cannot believe that there is any pride in the Creator for 'creating' such a sorry society that exists on this planet today.

This is very good, d.william! I have some skepticism about certain religions and felt that I was the only one who felt that way, but I'm not. Yes, a lot of religions seem to be very dangerous and more than manipulative as each one extrmemely believe theirs should be the way of the world. But, each person is his or her own, separate individual of beliefs and morals.
Some people seem to need organised religion, which is all good as long as they don't try and compel or force other people to join in. I think that a lot of people in mainstream religions don't follow them slavishly, and only take on board what they feel comfortable with
I've just read some biographies about the FLDS (fundamentalist latter day saints) & children of God/the Family - sexual abuse of children etc. Utterly disgusting and amazing that people can be brainwashed so such extremes
Yes, I think the desire to be accepted by someone is very strong in humans. Most sane people wouldn't join these cults - they are born into them.
Amen to this post! Its group think, social acceptance... come be religious with us and you will feel better about yourself, you will prosper, you will go to heaven, you will be making "the right choice," and now follow all our instructions and give us donations so we can keep afloat. Oh, and we wont mention that if you slip up and others here know about it, you will be secretly mocked and pitied behind your back even though we will always smile and ask how you are. If you dont volunteer we will only overlook it for a little while, then we will judge that you arent being a very good Christian, but still smile and ask how you are.....
There are also many that are served their religion on a platter as children and they assume that is the only platter (the right platter), or they are scared to go to the buffet of information available to them to make their own choice.. bc if they do, they may go to hell.
You write very well:)

Very interesting and informative hub--I had no idea about CLDS being what you claim they are..and sitting back and reading more--I can see why you would go to that length to educate. Thanks for the hub
